The Power of Dreams

Contemporary Cherokee Warrior’s Meditative Quest Guides Him to Woman in Spiritual Crisis

A night of slumber can immerse people in meaningful worlds where, if the dreamer is receptive, much can be learned. Robert C. Flanders explores this topic through a unique story laden with symbolism and vivid imagery in his compelling new book, The Beautiful Fountain (now available through AuthorHouse). The story begins as a modern-day Cherokee embarks on a mountaintop meditation to seek the mystical meaning of the wine used in Christian communion service. Dove Warrior, named for his animal guide, is soon entranced by the voice of a woman singing in German, and he travels in spirit to find the source.

Meanwhile, Anja, a young woman in the Bavarian town of Nuremberg is settling down to an exhaustive sleep. A gifted soprano who is studying at the city’s academy of music, she has become engaged that evening and carries heavy issues with her into sleep, troubled by the fact that she will not enter this marriage a virgin.

Although Dove Warrior and Anja have never met, they connect in their respective altered states as they experience numerous encounters steeped in symbolism. With Dove Warrior looking on, Anja first follows a beautiful voice to its source: a hideously deformed gypsy singing a lament. She quickly realizes the woman represents her soul, which Anja considers an abomination. Later, a Prince emerges, the image of her ideal man.

Throughout the book, Anja and Dove Warrior travel together, yet alter the quest to fit their individual needs. A dragon, a doomed boy from Nuremberg history and other meaningful people, places and creatures surface to help the young woman through her turmoil. In the end, both the Cherokee warrior and the German woman achieve that which they were seeking.

A poetic adventure that reflects the mystique of dreams, The Beautiful Fountain’s messages of spiritual worth and global connections await the reader’s discovery.

Flanders retired as a lieutenant with the Emergency Medical Service of the DeKalb County Department of Public Safety in suburban Atlanta, in which position he supervised paramedics. To balance this perspective of life, he performed with the DeKalb Concert Ballet, an amateur company, but maintains that “no firefighter ever saw me in tights.” As he approached retirement, he enrolled in college and earned a degree in philosophy. He has been awarded plaques for both Paramedic of the Year and Philosophy Undergraduate Student of the Year. A native of Atlanta, Flanders lived in Nuremberg for two years after he retired. He currently lives in Lawrenceville, Ga. The Beautiful Fountain is his first published book.
